I’d like to share with you one of my favourite bits of advice for people who manage sales teams.

It’s designed to help you see how your new position has changed the work that you do. And it will keep you from falling into the trap that so many do when they move up from being the “brilliant sales bod” only to turn into the “exhausted, frustrated sales manager.”

The advice is this:

As a sales manager it is not your job to hit the sales target – it’s your job to ensure the target gets hit!

Subtle difference in words – massive difference in results.

Seems easy enough, but most people don’t get the deeper meaning to it just by reading it.

Trevor Campbell came along to one of my sale management masterclasses recently and kindly posted this on my LinkedIn profile afterwards;

If you want to be the person who succeeds in taking your sales team to the next level, you need to pay attention to this.

When you get your team to take responsibility for their own success, your job become instantly easier. Targets get hit. Sales meetings become more creative and productive. Your team spend their time delivering your plans, not their excuses.

You can achieve this by….

* only focusing on the things that only you can do

* knowing how to motivate your people to over deliver

* having a coaching strategy that fits easily into your existing schedule

Understand how to do all that and your team will fly past the competition and their targets – and only you will know why.
